Non-Surgical Skin Rejuvenation Option
Getting the sight of your body aging can be a disconcerting experience. We are so used to looking at our face and skin that suddenly finding the undisputable signs of time passing catches people off guard.
Afterwards you might look up skin rejuvenation treatments online, and all sorts of injections come up. But needles are not for everyone, and they usually rely on foreign substances that stay in the body for some time, which isn’t appealing for those who would rather find a more natural solution. Cue, chemical peels!
Using chemical substances to lightly exfoliate the skin has been done since the ancient egyptians. It’s a practice widely known and researched so the level of risk is pretty low.
A chemical peel can renew the top layer of the dermis, reducing texture related issues like mild scars, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles. They can also help with different pigment issues like sun spots, hyperpigmentation or even discoloration.
What Chemical Peels Do
But what about the science behind it all? Putting chemicals on your skin without more information understandably can sound risky, even if multiple studies prove their safety. So it’s better to have a breakdown of what the substances are and how they interact with your skin.
The first thing to know is that chemical peels are acid based treatments, that (according to a 2017 study) only go as far as 60 micrometers into the dermis, the width of an average human hair.
The acids for most chemical peels are naturally derived. Alpha hydroxy acids used for fine lines are found in grapes, milk and even apples! Beta hydroxy acids, which are also popular for treating acne prone skin, appear in willow trees.
What happens when the chemical comes in contact with your skin is that the bonds that hold together dead and superficial cells get dissolved, therefore slowly removing the entire layer, revealing the healthy skin underneath and stimulating it into more even melanin and collagen production, depending on the depth and type of the peel.
The image you may have in your mind of a person’s face slowly flaking won’t necessarily be your case, and the dramatic look only happens in determined chemical peels that are usually a little deeper.
Types of Chemical Peels
Depending on what your expectations are for the chemical peel, your healthcare provider might recommend one of three options: a superficial, medium or deep peel. The names are relative to how intense the chemical will be.
Superficial
These are the ones usually done with soft alpha hydroxy acids. They do wonders for fine lines and mild pigmentation issues. Superficial chemical peels gently exfoliate the upper layer of skin, giving you a light touch up effect if you are just looking for a subtle rejuvenation.
Medium
Medium chemical peels are perfect for you if you struggle with hyperpigmentation, discoloration or sun spots. Sometimes it’s also advised if you want to minimize wrinkles like crow’s feet.
Deep
These ones are for stubborn issues that require a more intense set of acids. They can help with notable acne scars, deep wrinkles, and in some cases even with precancerous growths! Deep chemical peels should only be performed once, and the recovery time will be a bit longer than with medium or superficial peels.
